Two Questions That Can Change Your Life

I have grown to learn that it is always good to think about your future. Look at yourself from the outside looking in. What do people think of you, and what is your purpose? If your future is unclear this can actually become nerve racking. Life is built up of chapters. I am determined to finish this chapter in my life before moving on to the next and yes, I do believe I am better today than yesterday. There are friends, instructors, boyfriends, girlfriends, parents and many others who are in your life for some reason. Each of these people play a role and it's up to you to change and be better with each day that comes.

My Class Reflections

1. I have learned so much, and when it is listed, it looks like even more. I was not even aware of the possibilities of Google Docs, Spreadsheets, and Presentation. The fact that it saves all of your work upon exiting really sold me. I also may become a new fan of blogging.
Our podcasting project was surprisingly fun, and it is a great idea, as is blogging and Comments4Kids, for the classroom.Twitter is also very new for me. I am still learning what all it has to offer. Along with YouTube, Personal Learning Network, and communicating with other students and teachers outside of my region, I have found new ways to use these tools to my advantage.
I never knew YouTube could have such helpful and educational videos. This is also the case with iTunes and iTunesU, although I am still not sure if I am a fan of iTunesU yet. I have yet to discover the benefits iTunesU can offer. Adding pictures and images to the blog has been a new lesson for me. I am glad I learned how to do it. Not only will all this help me grow as a professional, but so will ACCESS, ALEX, and Delicious. I will also be able to use Google forms and data bases to keep my classroom organized. If I ever need to refer back to these topics, I can always visit Foliotek. These tools and programs have truly made me more tech literate and will help be better my future school.

2/3. With all of the above been said, I do not think it is anything I would have liked to learn that I didn't. When entering this class, I did not expect to have learned so much. I can only hope to retain everything, because there was entirely too much that we had to do. I really hope I can remember all of it!

4. To a certain extent, yes, this class did excite me, but not until I actually started on the assignments. At times though, I can say it was bit frustrating. With all of this being very new to me, sometimes it felt like it would be too much for me to actually learn from it. This class has taught me how to better manage my time and to only focus on present assignments. I spent most of this semester worried about what was to come next month. I always looked ahead on the syllabus and got worried.

5. I would say all of the lessons, at first, appeared to be intellectually challenging. This was only because I was afraid of technology and scared of the outcomes. Now I can say I can face some problems with a better attitude.

6. If there was one thing I would change about this course, it would be the workload. It can become a bit challenging when taking 5 other classes.

7. I consider myself to be on a some what good level as far as being technologically literate. It could use much improvement. I still am intimidated by the computer there is just so much that can be done.

8. To improve my skills I will work with programs more often and also try new ones. Any courses that are offered for teachers, I will enroll. I know my technological literacy will determine how smooth my classroom will run. It is up to me to stay moderate.

PLE vs PLN

I was so shocked that this young lady was in the 7th grade! That is completely AMAZING!! Her PLE is so magnificent and I was able use her as a resource I totally agree, with this type of classroom. which gives you freedom to do what you need to do, when you need to do it. I agree that all assignments should be taken care of ASAP. If not, there is a big chance of falling behind or becoming unorganized. I am thankful for students like this who share their learning experiences with the public. This is very helpful for me and I wish I had of checked her out earlier in the semester. She is very talented.

Dr.Seuss -The Zax

I loved Dr. Seuss as a child! This video was an awesome way to teach us a lesson with something as simple as a cartoon. TChange is very difficult and I believe this Dr. Seuss video is one of many different approaches we can use to help people see that change is always necessary. As teachers we need to be able to open our minds to new ideas. The education world is changing day by day and we have to step up and keep up with technology so we will be able to better understand our students. We will be able to make a major impression!

SKYPE!!!

I was first introduced to skype last semester. Dr.Juarez used t\it quite often for classroom discussions. Skype has enabled me to keep in touch with my friends and family overseas and even 45 minutes away in Gulfport, MS. I used it to stay in contact with my new found friends from all over because I travel a lot. It truly is an amazing program. Since this school year started, I started using it for academic purposes. I use it to keep in touch with my EDM 315 professor Dr.Juarez. This is a great program and I urge everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, to get on board and get with SKYPE!

Comments 4 Teachers 1

I really loved Darah Bonham's determination and wanting to get the job done. He is looking into all types of ways to get funding for his plan It’s called the ee2015 and stands for Educational Entrepreneurship 2015.

Comments4Kids Week 13

It was a wonderful photo and I wish I could be on that boat right now!

Comments4Kids Week 12

Jordan was so cute! I enjoyed his little 5 secs and I love swimming in the ocean too!

An Animal That Can Live Forver

The turritopsis nutricula species of jellyfish may be the only animal in the world to have truly discovered the fountain of youth. Turritopsi nutricula, can regenerate its entire body over and over again. Researchers are studying the jellyfish to discover how it is able to reverse its aging process.

Thanks Maria for sharing that with the world, but that is pretty creepy. Yikes!

Comments4Kids Week 9

Mr.McClung relieved cabin fever by holding the entire class outside because the weather was just so amazing. He isn't a fan of cold weather.

Comments4KidsWeek8

I read the blog on Ms.V's and Mrs. Washington's group they read 5 Little Ducks and they are getting ready for the play of that book. They taped a song about 3 times. They had an assembly that day as well. The students did not get to go outside because it was snowing that particular day. It really seems like the students are enjoying school. I enjoyed reading this blog because Kindergarten is the grade level I want to teach.

Comments4Kids Week 7

I read a Book contract that was the timeliness of the movie and book Twilight. I loved it because Jessica did a great job and summarizing the events for the movie and book, and it was in chronological order. Great Job Jessica!

Google Earth

I typed in my home address in Gulfport,MS and I saw my house and my dad's truck in the driveway. It was pretty creepy, and I don't like the fact that you can google my address and see my house.

Comments4Kids

Matt had tp create a movie in the style of the ‘Where’s Matt’ you tube videos. Their task was to go through the entire movie making process and create a finished product that was not only in the same style, but also allowed for audiences that haven’t seen the ‘Where’s Matt’ movies.

Oh the boys, they made me smile after a long day! That was absolutely brilliant. I can’t wait to show it to my class. You did a wonderful job of filming they seemed to be having way too much fun!!!

My Personal Learning Network

My personal learning network is not as big as I would like for it to be, it has grown. At the beginning of the semester I was not even aware of what a personal learning network was. But now I have one and still working to expand it. I have made connections with Dr. Brenda Juarez, Brook McNair, and Dr. Cunningham. As I start my career, I hope to gain a huge and helpful learning network.

Here are some tools I use:

Facebook
Skype
Myspace
YouTube

Randy Pausch's Last Lecture....

Randy Pausch's Last Lecture

What's worse, is that even though I realize what it is like to see someone with such courage handling it like that everyday, I still don't think I could bring myself to be selfless about it. I couldn't possibly imagine the amount of pain he is in everyday. However, now I see that everyday now since I have been sitting in the ICU with my little brother the past 2 weeks. Hopefully, when everything is said and done, and my brother takes a turn for the better; he will be able to put his tribulations aside like Mr. Pausch.

By the end of my life, I hope to touch half as many of my students' lives as he did. I hope I am in good health when that time comes for me to touch others lives. Randy Pausch has given life lessons that everyone can appreciate and use in life.

ALEX

ALEX is a resourceful website set up by the state of Alabama to help their educators. It is not only for teachers, but also for students and administrators. ALEX is a tool that allows all aspects of the school to get involved. What caught my attention, was on this website there are lesson plan and podcasting sections. For teachers beginning their career, ALEX will be the perfect place for them to start. I am really excited to work with programs like this, for I know I will need as many resources as I can get.

This class has taught me that I can not do this on my own. The more and more people begin to realize this, the better our education system will become. I am looking forward on working to expand my personal and professional learning network. ALEX is a great start for all educators.

This is How We Dream

This Is How We Dream is a very interesting video. It definitely shows how our culture has grown. One day, in the near future, I do believe that we will move away from using textbooks in our classrooms. I do not know how open I am to this change, but it is a realistic possibility. It may even be for the best and help cut down on the cost of publication and print.

This video speaks about iUniversity I am still wondering what is it exactly used for. It really seems like a helpful tool if you know how and what to use it for. The programs used in the second video looks so unique. From this class I hope to gain useful knowledge sure as these programs.

Wendy Drexler

First I would like to state that this video technique is really cool. Simple but full of great information. One of the first things I learned in college was to network with others and make yourself marketable. This video does a great job of showing just how far one can get by exploring their resources.

I am looking forward to expanding my professional network. I think this class provides a great opportunity for that. Even though the idea of all this is a scary thought, we will greatly appreciate it later.

Micheal Wesch: Toward A New Future

Mr. Wesch is not the first person I have heard call my generation narcissistic and vain, but he is the first to explain this claim in a way in which I can understand.

I have never thought about YouTube as being a "movement". After watching that video, I realize how much I actually use the site. Although I mostly use it for lyric, funny clips, and music video searches, it can also be an educational site. YouTube can not only be used in a classroom as a research tool, but also a learning tool. Helpful videos such as the one just watched can be viewed by a high school class. As an educator, I could encourage my students to upload educational videos. Individuals could definitely expand their learning network with this technique.

What I learned This Year by Mr. Mclung

Wow, I can not wait til my first year of teaching. It will be an amazing experience. Educators often forget to include the small things and maybe this blog will remind them just how important they are. I agreed one hundred percent with everything discussed. Nothing ever goes the exact way that you plan it and lessons won't be any different. You will have to get out of that fantasy stage of teaching and then you will be moving along to the surivval stage, but hopefully, in my first year of teaching, I won't stay in my survival stage too long.

iTunes University
Tunes University is definitely a new concept to me. As strange as the idea of college on iTunes is to me, it seems to be very popular tool. I am not sure if I would ever consider using iTunes University personally or in my classroom. This is not to say that I would not make my students aware of its existence. I guess the question still remains, what is the point? I guess it would work wonders for celebrities and all, but for me, I don't think so.

Podcasting

I really do not know if the students in lower grades will pay attention to podcasts. Children are mostly visual learners and will most likely take in the things they need learn if they see them Podcasts take you back to radio days. That is all that it really is the radio on the internet.

The first podcast I listened to was the SmartBoard Lessons Year End Ideas it was pretty good it was very conversational because there were two hosts. They had a great idea on this one about how to use movies in math this is a great idea, It makes math more interesting to kids. They were complex in this podcast but not too complex to the point where people could not understand what they were talking about.

ConnectLearning Episode 90 it was different than all the other ones it was at a conference and was a question and answer session. In my opinion it was just alright.. It was better that the last one in that it grabbed you at the beginning and held your attention instead of about boring you half to death. Using I pods in education is becoming a big thing i didn't even realize this but it makes perfect sense the Ipod is like having a radio, CD player, DVD player, and books all in the palm of your hand. It was interesting to see how some of the people in the podcast were using technology in education and what they were using.

Pod-casting is like any other type of media if used right it can be very helpful and entertaining. Most of these post were ok I didn't enjoy this that much but it was ok. If you were to use this type of thing in the classroom you would have to be careful on what you used. Like I said before If you don't hook the listener in the first few seconds then you might lose them, and if thats a student that could be bad. Podcast would be great for the high school students and maybe middle school I don't think podcast would work in the lower grades because the don't have the attention span to use them properly hell I don't think i do.

Podcast Review

The podcast featured things that were very helpful. Not only were the topics helpful, but most host offered other websites where information could be found. It is also important to have a expert guest on the show. The topics should target a certain audience and the time limits of the conversations should be in accordance with the audience type. Podcast are great for those really interested in forms of learning like this. Some people could be taken back by just the audio version.

When composing my own podcast within in a group, I will remember to keep all of my notes in mind. I will try to reach more than one audience and more than one type of learning group. The best way to approach this problem would be to do a video podcast. Listeners can listen and visual learners can also follow along. I would also involve more than just one host. More information is leaked when more than one person is speaking on a subject, it's also a great way to prevent listeners from becoming bored. I'm nervous about my podcast even though the audience won't be able to see me.

A Look Into Our World As Students
This particular video was very intriguing, it hit dead on to what students in college classrooms are really doing in class when they bring their computers to class. I really related to the student who held up the notebook stating that they spend hundreds of dollars on books that they will never open, and to top it all off you can not even get the full amount of what you paid for the book back! Fact is that many teachers assign books to be read and then do not address the contents in the books or even test the students on the information. All in all its pointless to buy textbooks. I'm glad EDM 31o does not require a book.

I love how the information was presented to us in the video. It was very creative, and I loved it. The videographer could have slowed down the pan and focused better because it was hurting my eyes, however it was very informative. It raised a good point on how half of what we learn we just learn for the test, and we will not use have of these classes in the real world anyways.

Technology is Taking Over

The four points mention in this post were very true. Education is not a profession for someone who does not enjoy learning. As you get older their will always be new ways of teaching, and just because you learned it a certain way does not mean that a new generation will learn it the same way. Technology is taking over at overwhelming rate and as educators we have to be ready for what ever comes our way. We must learn to keep up with the times, because if not money will definitely be wasted.

No matter how much you constantly enforce something into some one's head, if they are not captured by the material at first glance then your efforts are possibly irrelvent. This why educators must find new resources and new ways to present and teach things to our students.

It's Not Okay to Be Illiterate

In Karl Fisch's post, "Is It Okay to Be A Technologically Illiterate Teacher?", Mr. Fisch went into thorough detail about how teachers need to become technologically literate, and by doing so he was also encouraging them. It is imparitative that teachers become technologically literate because their students will be, and the teachers need to be very prepared to teach the future leaders of our country.

It is a great idea for teachers and staff to be required to take technology and software classes. They need to be prepared, and this will only make them better teachers. The best teachers are those who are always willing to learn and keep on learning. I completely agree with the statement Fisch made, "In order to teach it, we have to do it....." It is a very powerful statement.

Mr. Winkle Wakes- January 17, 2010

Mr. Winkle Wakes

Mr. Winkle woke up from 100 year nap and was confused because the world how he knew was completely different. The video should all the different advances in technology. The new technology consisted of EKG's, computers, vehicles, copy machines, fax machines, cellular phones. However the only place that remained the same was the schools.

The You Tube video Mr. Winkle Wakes, is a take on the old childrens' story of Rip Van Winkle.
This video pin pointed on a very important issue, on how is that we have advanced technology throughout our culture, but not in education. We do not have them in our educational institutions so how can people learn to use these things. Mr. Winkle was excited and content that schools had not changed, which represents the conformity of those people in our society that are illiterate when it comes to technology. That is not a good thing.

Did You Know??

I was shocked to read these statistics. The top 10 most in demand job was not invented until 2004! That is remarkable, and simply amazing that teachers are teaching their students to do job and work that are not even in existence yet. I completely agree with the job statistics, especially the one about 1 in 4 workers has been with their job less than a year because that is the case with myself. I was quite surprised that it has been less than a decade since the internet has taken over our lives completely!

However, I was very shocked that text messaging is not as relevantly new as we all thought it was. We are always talking about how America is the wealthiest country, but yet this other countries are surpassing us with the brilliance! China will soon be the #1 English speaking country. This information opened my eyes to a lot of things I was unaware of.

The Importance of Creativity

In today's school creativity is one of those things that is very frowned upon. Creativity helps you a better job of what you can do. I agree with Ken about incorporating more creativity in the minds of the students of today's era. We need to nuture our children's creativity and not discourage their creativity.

Creativity stimulates the mind and many individuals are discouraging these kids. I agree with Ken when he said we are teaching the children to be good workers, but not creative thinkers. We to challenge these students and broaden their horizons. They need to think outside of the box, and they should not be so typical.

Harness Your Students

It is amazing how these classrooms will be going paperless! There will be no need for paper, pens, or pencils. I am glad that teachers notice there is good in technology in the classrooms. Soon there will cell phones incorporated into the classroom. Students will be skyping with classrooms in India.
